Visiting Dublin: A Guide to the Basics

When describing elements of Ireland we usually add, except Dublin. This capital city has a culture and aura of its own. In other words you can know the rest of Ireland and not know Dublin and vice versa. We do recommend its many attractions to all visitors.

Shopping

If you’re looking to shop til you drop, then you’ve come to the right city. Whether you’re looking for basic travel supplies, or want to splash out on designer clothes, records or books, head for the two main shopping streets of Grafton Street/Stephen's Green on the southside, and Henry Street on the northside. These two streets are either side of the river and you’ll find malls, large clothing stores and department stores on the main streets, with cooler, smaller independent shops lining the streets in between.

TV

If you’re worried about being cut off from your favourite TV shows, you’ll find that all but the most basic accommodation will provide you with TV in your room, usually with digital TV channels. Sky broadcast in Ireland of course, in fact they’re the most popular service in the country. Besides Sky, the main channels are home-produced, including RTE One and Two, TV3 and TG4 and 3e, as well as BBC NI channels. Through Sky or digital you’ll be able to access a huge number of channels from around the world.

Groceries

You’ll be spoiled for choice when shopping for food in Dublin. For your basics, you can’t beat the local supermarket chains, which you’ll find dotted all over the city in convenient locations. You’ll probably recognise the familiar names of Tesco and the Co-Op, but you’ll also find Superquinns, as well as Nolans, who specialise in artisanal foodie goodies. Besides your culinary basics, these supermarkets are a great place to pick up essential toiletries like toothpaste and shampoo as well as over-the-counter medicines.

If you’re looking for something a little more exotic food-wise, then you can head to Hayang’s Korean Supermarket, as well as Asia Market, and for a taste of South Africa, check out Jabula.

Besides the supermarket shops, Dublin is home to some fabulous specialist food markets, where you can pick up all manner of local produce, organic eats and tasty homebaked treats. The Dublin Food Co-op on Newmarket is the place to go for all your organic and whole food needs.

Transport

Getting around the city of Dublin is easy. Besides the car or hiring a bicycle, there’s the metro (which is really quick to figure out as there are only 2 lines), extensive bus routes, the Luas light rail tram, train links and DART, the Dublin Area Rapid Transit. This is the only electrified railway in the country, and links Dublin with the surrounding suburban areas of the city. And if you fancy taking things a little easier, you can travel by pleasure boat along the city’s two canals too. You can find out everything you need to know about planning your transport in Dublin at the city’s official transport website:www.dublin.ie/transport/home.htm
